Southern Cross
Published in Hardcover by Galde Press, Inc. (May, 1998)
Author: Madeline Montgomery Dale
Average review score:

A gentle and genteel story of a family during the Civil War
Southern Cross by Madeline M. Dale is a gentle and genteely written story of Mrs. Dale's Kentucky forebears during the War between the States. Apart from the fact that it is a superb "read", drawing a reader eagerly from chapter to chapter to see what happens next, it also rewards the reader with fresh insights and glimpses into historical facts.

Adult readers can appreciate this novel; in addition it has appeal for young readers. I particularly rejoiced to find it one that might be recommended for secondary school reading lists. As the English curriculum specialist for a number of years for the forty secondary schools in Palm Beach County, Florida, I collaborated with heads of the English departments to develop recommended reading lists for each grade (and skills) level of our unified curriculum. The task was not simple, as you can imagine, cofronting not only a mutiplicity of teachers' opinions and students' diverse reading abilities and preferences, but also the sometimes censorious judgements of individuals in the community. Without hesitation, I would urge that Mrs. Dale's Southern Cross be included in school reading lists.

Books bring understanding of people, places and times apart from our own sphere. The people in Mrs. Dale's novel are worth coming to know--foregrounded against the tug-of-war between their everyday subsistence, loyalty to home, and moral sensibilty, and the burden of slavery. I recommend it highly.

Civil War historical novel based on true incidents.
A story based on facts as remembered by the great granddaughter of a tobacco farmer in rural Kentucky. An intimate account of the thoughts, purposes and struggles of one family facing the brutality of being torn apart by a national conflict that bled the nation. A personal account of slavery and how people who opposed it coped with being slave owners themselves, the cross that many Southerners had to bear. After the war they could not vote, could get no financial help and had no rights. There was no Marshall Plan for the South. Birth, death, war, prison, financial ruin, and a new start reveal life as it was in the 19th century in America's heartland.

Snowman

Go for all your dreams!
I'd say this book is a valuable lesson for all people who have a dream. The closely-knit de Leyer family buys a horse whose destiny was the slaughterhouse, but... , well, I won't tell you anymore, get the book and read it. The copy I read (many years ago) had very good photos of Snowman and some member of the de Leyer family. I give this book five stars because I cannot give it six!

TRUE STORY. A lesson for all horsemen who have a dream
Young Harry deLeyer survives the horrors of WWII and is sponsored US imigration by the American family whose son he buried after an enemy attack on Holland. Penniless, yet with a wealth of horsemanship, he manages to make ends meet by training poor little rich girls to ride properly. One day, his dream of owning a great grand prix jumper lands in his lap, but like most of us, we look a gift horse in the mouth and he gives it away, yet, by fate and a VERY unusual and determined horse who knows a worthy man when he meets him, Harry deLeyer exceeds his wildest hopes and dreams and ranks among the top horse and rider teams in the world.

Writing a Life: L.M. Montgomery (Canadian Biography Series)
Published in Paperback by ECW Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Mary Rubio and Elizabeth Waterston
Average review score:

Excellent biography for those wanting to know more about LMM
This book is a good, brief source for the information found in L.M. Montgomery's journals. Mario Rubio and Elizabeth Waterson edit the "Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery" series so they definitely know their subject! This book is ideal for anyone who doesn't want to read all four journal volumes, or who has read all four journals but wants even more information.

The authors also, I believe, have access to the original, hand-written volumes of all of LMM's journals. This means they know what's in LMM's final journal, volume 5, which may not be published for some time as some people she wrote about are still living. But they were able to include other details of LMM's life after 1935, which alone makes it worthwhile.

Superb brief biography!
Writing a life: L.M. Montgomery is written by two extremely well documented authors. Very brief, this biography gives you an overall idea of L.M. Montgomery's life, ideas and writing. A must read!

William Shakespeare: A Textual Companion
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (June, 1997)
Authors: Gary Taylor, John Jowett, William Montgomery, and Stanley Wells
Average review score:

A Great Book of Shakespearian Scholarship
William Shakespeare: A Textual Companion

Though billed as a companion to "The Norton Shakespeare, Based on the Oxford Edition," "William Shakespeare: A Textual Companion" is a superb reference for any reader of Shakespeare's plays. The book gives the editorial principles and the explanations of editorial decisions made by the editors of the Oxford Shakespeare. The Textual Companion deals with the plays and poems is a systematic basis. This book will deepen anyone's appricaition for the Oxford editors' solutions to textual problems. The real value of this book goes is that it goes beyond just being an explanation of one edition. This book offers a comprehensive overview of the textual problem that any reader of Shakespeare should be aware of.

An example good editing comes from "The Merry Wives of Windsor" 1.4.88-9. The line appears "Ile doe yoe your/ Master what good I can:" in the 1623 folio. John Jowett who edited the play says that the "yoe" is suspicious and goes on the give his reasons. He belives it is a miscorrection. "Yoe" was intended for correction, but instead the compositor inserted "your" and left the "yoe" as is. The line printed in the Oxford edition is "I'll do your master what good/I can". I agree with Jowett's reasons and his correction.

Even though this book goes a long way in presenting textual problems and editorial solutions there are some editorial problems which have not been resolved. For example in "The Tempest" 4.1.123 we read this "So rare a wondered father and a wise". Tthe Oxford edition has "wise" but in the note to this line on page 616 they follow Jeanne Addison Roberts' 1978 article and say the word was "wife" in the first folio. Whether the word was "wife" or "wise" is not yet a settled question. Blayney in his introduction to the Norton Facsimile 2nd Edition (p. xxxi) takes issue with Roberts's conclusions, and for now this does remain an open question.

This book is one of the great books of Shakespearian scholarship. Though I do not agree in every detail, I can say that my appriciation and admiration for the Oxford edition of Shakespeare has increased because of this book. No critical reader of Shakespeare should go without this book.

Background scholarship on the texts of Shakespeare's plays
This book accompanies the ground-breaking Oxford Complete Works of Shakespeare (1986) and explains the choices made by the editors in their selection of early printed texts and in their correction of errors in the earliest editions. Additionally, this provides the most recent thorough examination of the problems of editing Shakespeare, of establishing which plays he wrote and the order in which he wrote them, and the relation between the solitary reading experience and the social theatrical experience. If you need answers to questions like "how many quartos of Hamlet were published in Shakespeare's lifetime?" and "which one best represents the play as performed?", this book is the place to look for a thorough scholarly exploration of these topics. If you want criticism about Shakespeare's plays and their meaning, this book is not for you.

I am the author of this book. who is Joan B. Klope?
This book was written in the late 70's because of the problems pastors were having in regards to exemption and non-profit status. It met with good success but has been out of print for a number of years.
